Check for non-authorized GMO linseed/flaxseed
In September 2009, the EU Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) reported its findings on the genetically modified (GM) linseed/flax variety FP967/CDC Triffid. An application for FP967/CDC Triffid has never been filed in the EU and zero tolerance for this GM variety therefore applies in the EU. However, traces of this GM flax have been discovered in cereal and bakery products in Germany, Belgium, Sweden and Denmark. ScanBi Diagnostics is able to test for GM flax.
Detection of GM flax (FP967/CDC Triffid)
This flax GM variety was originally developed by the Saskatchewan University Crop Development Centre, Canada. The GM event conferred herbicide resistance, enabling the variety to be cultivated on soils containing triasulfuron and metsulfuron-methyl.
The GM flax variety Triffid was tested in field trials from 1988-2002 and it has received regulatory approval for food, feed and the environment in both Canada and the United States. However, there has been no safety assessment by the EU and no application for EU approval has been submitted for this GMO, so zero tolerance applies. This means any that flax seeds or cereal and bakery products containing flax testing positive for FP967/CDC Triffid are not marketable in the EU.
Canada supplies approximately 70% of the total flax/linseed utilized in the EU annually. The latest updates on the situation are published by the Flax Council of Canada.
The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre now has a test method for GMO linseed/flax FP967/CDC Triffid, which has been developed by Genetic ID NA, Inc. as a “NOST-Spec Construct-specific method for the detection of the CDC Triffid Flax (Event FP967) Using Real-time PCR”. The method was transmitted to the Community Reference Laboratory for GM Food and Feed (CRL-GMFF) of the European Commission Joint Research Centre by the German authorities.
