Assuring quality seed of spring canola
Detection of winter-type canola in spring canola

Admixture of winter canola in spring canola affects the quality of the crop and lowers the yield. Winter canola requires a vernalization period in order to flower and will flower with a delay compared with spring canola. Admixtures can occur both as a result of undesired cross-pollination between two types and physical seed admixture.

There are number of genetic factors determining the winter and spring phenotypes in canola, where FLC genes are the key regulators.

ScanBi diagnostics offers tests for detecting the presence of winter canola in spring canola material using markers targeting the genetic factors determining the winter type in canola.

These tests are performed using high throughput Real-Time PCR technology at low cost and with a short turnaround time.

The test targeting one of the FLC gene is available for both bulk and individual samples, while for other factors only individual samples can be analyzed.

The bulk seed test is qualitative (detection level down to 0.01%). The amount of FLC ‘winter-type’ gene can be estimated.

For all single seed and leaf sample tests, the results can be reported as: detected/not detected; or zygosity of the gene per individual; or percentage of individuals possessing the trait.

To lower the testing costs, analysis of the winter/spring types can be combined with other analyses, such as GMO tests of the Ogura hybrid system or pathogens. After analysis, we can return the DNA from your material to you.

ScanBi Diagnostics can provide you with sampling instructions and containers for your material.
